BREEDING ECOLOGY AND POPULATION DYNAMICS OF THE GREYLAG GOOSE IN SOUTH SWEDEN
(To be updated)

The neckbanding of Greylag Geese in SW Scania southernmost Sweden that started in 1984 offers excellent opportunities to study the breeding ecology and population dynamics of the species based on observations based on individually marked geese. Thanks to the observations of large numbers of observers all over the range of the Greylags their breeding performance and other aspects can be studied against a background knowledge of their migratory habits, staging and moulting areas and winterquarters.

Intensive studies of the population in the study area were undertaken annually from 1984 to the early 2000s. During these years the Greylags were followed from their arrival in early spring through the entire season until they left in late autumn.

In later years field work has been less intensive and mainly concentrated to study the following aspects:

1. The development of the breeding population in the study area.

2. The annual production of young in two of the lakes (Klosterviken & Yddingen).

3. The breeding results of individual geese over the years and possibly their life-time.

4. The survival of Greylag Geese of different categories.

Some general results from the studies are shown if you follow the links below. Note that some aspects are not longer so intensively studied as others and thus some data-sets ends some years before others.
