Feeding habits in spring

The field choice and feeding ecology of the Greylags were studied during a number of years during the first ten to fiteen years of the study. Later this aspect was not studied so systematically but general observations during the counts of the geese in spring did not show any more marked changes in their utilisation of the feeding areas.

The Greylags at Lakes Klosterviken and Börringesjön normally feed on winter wheat or grassland in spring time. These field types are also used at Lake Yddingen, but here the geese take advantage of the golf course, which provides them with highly nutritions grass all through the season. The general trend is an increasing proportion of geese using the winter wheat early in the season, gradually increasing the use of the grassland (or golf course), but there is some variation between the lakes as can be seen from the graphs below, giving a general idea of the field choice of the Greylags in the study area during the last few years.
