Research

I investigate sexual isolation and gene flow between mainland and island populations of the wall lizard Podarcis gaigae, a species where parallel evolution of island gigantism has taken place. Behavioural studies of sexual isolation between genetically closely related but morphologically different respective genetically more distantly related but morphologically more alike populations will be used to investigate the development of sexual isolation in the morphological divergence between populations. Morphometrical studies assessing the between population variation in feeding apparatus will give an estimate of the strength of the natural selection. I will combine those approaches with molecular estimates of the direction and magnitude of gene flow between populations. The aim with my research is to investigate the role of asymmetric gene flow for island populations and gain a better understanding of the roles of sexual- and natural selection in population divergence and speciation.
